About Hampshire Day
Hampshire Day is celebrated every year on 15 July, the feast day of St Swithin (also spelt Swithun), the 9th-century Anglo‑Saxon Bishop of Winchester. Recognised officially in 2019 by Hampshire County Council and the Flag Institute, this county-wide day honours St Swithin’s legacy and Hampshire’s rich cultural history.
Did you know? Legend says that if it rains on Hampshire Day, particularly at St Swithun’s Bridge in Winchester, it’ll rain for the next 40 days, as St Swithin famously controls the weather!
Who Was St Swithin?
St Swithin (or Swithun), born around 800 and died in 863, served as Bishop of Winchester. He was known for his humility, choosing to be buried outdoors so that rain could fall on his grave; until his remains were moved indoors in 971, prompting a legendary thunderstorm. His tomb exists in Winchester Cathedral, and he's venerated as the patron saint of Hampshire and the weather.
