Summary
Join Hampshire in celebrating its heritage on Hampshire Day, July 15th, the feast of St Swithin. Explore traditions, folklore, and ways to celebrate this special county day.

Hampshire Day is celebrated every year on 15 July, the feast day of St Swithin (also spelt Swithun), the 9th-century Anglo‑Saxon Bishop of Winchester. Recognised officially in 2019 by Hampshire County Council and the Flag Institute, this county-wide day honours St Swithin’s legacy and Hampshire’s rich cultural history.

  • Did you know? Legend says that if it rains on Hampshire Day, particularly at St Swithun’s Bridge in Winchester, it’ll rain for the next 40 days, as St Swithin famously controls the weather!

Who Was St Swithin?

St Swithin (or Swithun), born around 800 and died in 863, served as Bishop of Winchester. He was known for his humility, choosing to be buried outdoors so that rain could fall on his grave; until his remains were moved indoors in 971, prompting a legendary thunderstorm. His tomb exists in Winchester Cathedral, and he's venerated as the patron saint of Hampshire and the weather.

Traditions & Celebrations of Hampshire Day

  • Flag‑raising ceremonies at Castle Yard in Winchester around 9:30 am.

  • Community events across the county, such as screenings, heritage talks, maypole dancing, local history exhibitions, and live music that celebrates Hampshire’s culture

  • Folklore activities, often playful nods to the 40‑day weather superstition - think umbrella-themed decorations, weather‑inspired crafts, or local walking tours showcasing rainfall spots like the old Swithun’s Bridge.

How to Celebrate

  • Join local festivals or events. Check the Hampshire Cultural Trust, county council, or tourism site listings.

  • Fly the Hampshire flag: its red-and-white Tudor rose reflects regional pride.

  • Visit Winchester Cathedral or St Swithun’s Bridge, learn about early English Christian heritage, and soak in the local legend.

  • Host a get‑together: serve local treats, share folklore with friends and family, or even recite the rain‑rhyme:

    St Swithin’s Day if thou dost rain,
    For forty days it will remain;
    St Swithin’s Day if thou be fair,
    For forty days ’twill rain nae mair.
