About World Lion Day
Launched in 2013, World Lion Day is annually observed on August 10th with an aim to raise awareness and gather support for lion conservation. The big cat is listed as an endangered species in the IUCN Red List.
Whether guarding our temples, adorning our flags, decorating our coins and capturing our hearts, the lion is beyond doubt the world's most iconic species. On almost every continent and in thousands of cultures, the lion can be found demonstrating humanity's fascination with this magnificent beast. Despite the lions' symbolic importance throughout the ages, they are suffering from a silent extinction across Africa and India.
On this day, celebrate the lion, help create conservation awareness and help save them and their kingdom.
And of course, August 10th always falls in the Leo zodiac sign.
Importance of lions
Lions are the apex predator of their habitat. They check the population of grazers, thus helping in maintaining ecological balance. Lions also keep the population of their prey healthy and resilient as they target the weakest members of the herd. This indirectly helps in disease control in the prey population.
