About International Music Day
International Music Day
Music has a unique way of speaking to our souls, crossing cultural divides, and bringing people together.
Celebrated annually on October 1st, International Music Day is a global tribute to the art of sound and rhythm in all its wonderful forms.
Whether you love classical symphonies, upbeat pop tracks, folk tunes, or jazz improvisations, this day invites everyone to pause, listen, and appreciate how melody enriches our everyday lives.
Did you know? International Music Day was established in 1975 by the International Music Council (IMC) alongside UNESCO, thanks to the vision of legendary violinist and conductor Lord Yehudi Menuhin.
History of International Music Day
The idea for a dedicated day to honor musical art took root during a turbulent mid-20th-century landscape, driven by a desire to use culture as a bridge for international peace and friendship.
The International Music Council officially proclaimed October 1, 1975, as the inaugural International Music Day. Lord Yehudi Menuhin, then IMC president, famously noted that music creates order out of chaos and imposes continuity on the disjointed.
Since its inception, the observance has grown into a worldwide movement celebrated in over 150 countries, highlighting not only musical performance but also fundamental musical rights, such as access to education and the freedom of artistic expression.
How to Get Involved
Participating in International Music Day is all about connecting with the sounds that move you and supporting the community around you. Here are a few ways you can celebrate:
