About National Sundae Day
There are several claims as to the inventor of this popular dessert. Plainfield, Illinois claims to be the home of the very first ice cream sundae. A local belief is that a pharmacist named Charles Sonntag created the dish "after the urgings of patrons to serve something different." He named it the "sonntag" after himself, and since Sonntag means Sunday in German, the name was translated to Sunday, and later was spelled sundae.
Did you Know?
The longest ice cream sundae was created in 2018 at the Spirit of Texas Festival to create a mile-long sundae made with 500-gallons of ice cream, 2,000 cans of whipped cream and 20,000 cherries.
