German chocolate cake, originally German's chocolate cake, is a layered chocolate cake from the United States filled and topped with a coconut-pecan frosting.
In 1852, Sam German created a dark baking chocolate bar for Baker's Chocolate Company, and in his honour, the company named it "Baker's German's Sweet Chocolate."
