About National Dimples Day
What is National Dimples Day?
Have you ever found yourself completely charmed by the adorable little indentations that pop up on someone's cheeks when they flash a smile? Those sweet facial quirks are loved all over the world, and they have their very own occasion to shine!
Celebrated every year on July 9th, National Dimples Day is all about embracing these unique physical traits, sharing happy smiles, and spreading a wave of body positivity and self-love.
Whether you have a single cheek dimple, dual dimples, a classic cleft chin, or lower-back "dimples of Venus," this holiday is your perfect excuse to display them proudly. It is a lighthearted summer observance that reminds us to appreciate the tiny, natural details that make every individual uniquely beautiful.
The History of National Dimples Day
Compared to ancient seasonal traditions, National Dimples Day is a fresh face on the global calendar. The holiday was created in 2022 by an Atlanta, Georgia native known fondly as "Graceful Grady."
After noticing a massive uptick in fun, quirky daily holidays celebrating everything from favorite foods to pets, Grady went searching online to see when the world celebrated dimples. To his absolute surprise, a dedicated day simply didn't exist.
Stepping up as the self-appointed "Chief Dimples Officer," Grady established July 9th as the official date. He intentionally chose a midsummer slot to avoid crowding around major international holidays. He also reasoned that the warm, sunny month of July is prime time for people to feel relaxed, happy, and ready to share their best smiles with the world.
Did you know? Around the world, only about 20% to 30% of the human population possesses cheek dimples, making them a relatively rare and highly sought-after facial feature.
Did you know? Anatomically speaking, cheek dimples are caused by a split variation in the zygomaticus major muscle—the main facial muscle responsible for lifting the corners of your mouth when you smile.
Did you know? Dimples are historically deeply rooted in cultural folklore. In many traditional Chinese customs, they are considered a sign of good fortune, extreme luck, and long-lasting youthfulness.
How to Celebrate and Get Involved
You don't actually need to have dimples yourself to participate in this joyful day! It is an open invitation for everyone to share a little kindness and brighten up the community. Here are some of the best ways you can get involved:
Flash your biggest smile: If you are blessed with natural dimples, clear the stage for them! Smile warmly at coworkers, neighbors, and strangers throughout the day.
Pass out genuine compliments: Take a moment to tell a friend, family member, or colleague how much you love their smile. A sincere compliment is wonderfully contagious.
