About World PCOS Day
Shining a Light on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: It's World PCOS Day!
Every year on September 1st, we mark World PCOS Day – a significant observance dedicated to raising awareness and fostering unity around Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). This global event brings together individuals, families, healthcare professionals, and organizations to support the millions of people worldwide affected by this common yet often misunderstood condition.
World PCOS Day
World PCOS Day of Unity was initiated in September 2018 by the PCOS Challenge: The National Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Association. The primary goal is to enhance public understanding of PCOS, advocate for better diagnosis and treatment, and show solidarity with those living with the condition. Throughout the day, and indeed the entire month of September (which is PCOS Awareness Month), a variety of activities and campaigns take place globally, all aimed at shedding light on the physical, emotional, and financial burdens that PCOS can impose.
The day serves as a powerful reminder that no one facing PCOS is alone. It encourages open conversations, the sharing of personal stories, and the dissemination of accurate information to combat stigma and empower individuals to seek help and support.
Did you know? PCOS is one of the most common hormonal disorders affecting women of reproductive age, with estimates suggesting it impacts 1 in 10 women.
Did you know? Despite its prevalence, it's estimated that up to 70% of women with PCOS remain undiagnosed worldwide.
Did you know? PCOS is a leading cause of infertility and can also increase the risk of other serious health conditions, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and endometrial cancer.
World PCOS Day
Getting involved in World PCOS Day can take many forms, and every action, big or small, contributes to the collective effort of raising awareness. Here are a few ideas on how you can participate:
Educate Yourself and Others: Take the time to learn about the symptoms, challenges, and management of PCOS. Share reliable information from reputable sources (like PCOS Challenge or the World Health Organization) with your friends, family, and social networks. Use hashtags like #WorldPCOSDay, #PCOSAwareness, or #PCOSChallenge to join the online conversation.
Wear Teal: Teal is the official color for PCOS awareness. Wearing teal clothing, ribbons, or accessories on World PCOS Day is a simple yet visible way to show your support.
Participate in Events: Look for virtual or local events, such as webinars, Q&A sessions with experts, awareness walks, or fundraising activities organized by PCOS support groups and health organizations. PCOS Challenge often hosts or promotes various events.
Share Your Story: If you or someone you know is affected by PCOS, consider sharing your experiences (if you feel comfortable doing so). Personal stories can be incredibly powerful in helping others feel less isolated and more understood.
Support PCOS Organizations: Consider donating to or volunteering with organizations like PCOS Challenge that work tirelessly to provide support, education, and advocacy for the PCOS community.
Advocate for Better Care: Encourage conversations with healthcare providers about the importance of early diagnosis and comprehensive management of PCOS. Support initiatives that call for more research into the condition.
By coming together on World PCOS Day, we can amplify the voices of those affected by PCOS, push for greater understanding and resources, and ultimately improve the lives of millions around the globe. Let's make every September 1st a day of impactful action and unwavering support!
