What is World Parrot Day?

Every year on May 31, bird enthusiasts, conservationists, and pet owners around the globe unite to celebrate World Parrot Day. These charismatic, intelligent, and vibrant birds bring an abundance of color and joy to our world.

However, World Parrot Day is not just about admiring their beautiful feathers and uncanny ability to mimic human speech; it is also a vital call to action. The holiday raises awareness about the ongoing threats that wild and captive parrots face worldwide, including habitat destruction, climate change, and the illegal wildlife trade.

  • Did you know? Parrots are among the most intelligent birds on Earth, with some species, like the African grey parrot, possessing the cognitive and emotional capabilities of a four- or five-year-old human child.

  • Did you know? Nearly one in three parrot species faces the threat of extinction in the wild, making them one of the most threatened groups of birds on the planet.

  • Did you know? A group of parrots is fittingly called a "pandemonium," which perfectly captures their wild, noisy, and energetic social nature.

History of World Parrot Day

The very first World Parrot Day was established in 2004 by the World Parrot Trust (WPT), an organization dedicated to the survival of wild parrots and the welfare of companion birds.

To kick off the inaugural event on May 31, 2004, a passionate crowd of parrot lovers and their feathered companions gathered at Trafalgar Square in London. From there, they marched directly to Downing Street to deliver a petition signed by over 33,000 people, urging the European Union to implement a complete ban on the import of wild-caught birds.

This collective effort achieved historical success. In 2007, the European Commission officially enacted a permanent ban on wild bird imports into the EU, dramatically reducing the poaching of wild parrots for the international pet trade.

Today, the holiday has grown into a massive international movement supported by zoos, wildlife sanctuaries, and communities across multiple continents.
