About World Food Safety Day
From the farm to your fork, the journey of our food is a complex one. But have you ever stopped to think about how safe that journey is? Every year on June 7, we get to do just that by celebrating World Food Safety Day. It’s a day dedicated to raising awareness and encouraging actions to prevent, detect, and manage the risks that can come with our food. After all, safe food is essential for a healthy life and a thriving planet.
The History of World Food Safety Day
Relatively new to the global calendar, World Food Safety Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly on December 20, 2018. The very first one was celebrated in 2019. The day came about after the Codex Alimentarius Commission, the UN's food standards body, agreed in 2016 that a day dedicated to food safety was needed. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) take the lead in facilitating the observance of this important day, reminding us that food safety is a shared responsibility.
How to Celebrate World Food Safety Day
Everyone has a role to play in ensuring food safety, and there are many ways to get involved in World Food Safety Day. Here are a few ideas:
Educate Yourself and Others: Take some time to learn about safe food handling practices. The WHO offers the "Five Keys to Safer Food": keep clean, separate raw and cooked, cook thoroughly, keep food at safe temperatures, and use safe water and raw materials. Share what you learn with your family and friends.
Be a Smart Shopper: When you're at the grocery store, check the packaging for any signs of damage and always look at the expiration dates. Make sure cold foods are cold and frozen foods are solid.
Practice Food Safety at Home: Make a conscious effort to apply safe food handling practices in your own kitchen. This includes washing your hands regularly, using separate cutting boards for raw meats and vegetables, and storing leftovers properly.
Support Businesses with Good Practices: When you eat out, choose establishments that you know follow high food safety standards.
Join the Conversation Online: Use the hashtags #WorldFoodSafetyDay and #FoodSafety on social media to share information and see how others are celebrating around the world.
World Food Safety Day is more than just a day on the calendar; it's a call to action for everyone, everywhere. By working together, we can create a world where everyone has access to safe and nutritious food.
