What is International CAPS LOCK Day

Have you ever felt like someone was literally screaming at you through a glowing computer screen? Well, you are not alone!

International CAPS LOCK Day is an unofficial digital holiday celebrated annually to poke fun at the widespread overuse of capital letters in online text messages, emails, and social media posts.

Established back in 2000 by internet user Derek Arnold, this lighthearted observance serves as a humorous reminder about digital etiquette—specifically that typing in all caps is universally perceived as shouting.

While the holiday began as a satirical nudge to bring awareness to online communication standards, it has evolved into a fun way for internet communities to embrace humor, practice digital literacy, and playfully mock our everyday keyboard habits.

Whether you are drafting a work email or chatting with friends, this day encourages everyone to take a step back, look at their typing habits, and maybe give that lonely shift key some well-deserved vacation time.

• Did you know? International CAPS LOCK Day is actually celebrated multiple times a year by its enthusiasts, with October 22 and June 28 being the most popular dates!

How to Get Involved

Participating in International CAPS LOCK Day is easy and open to everyone with a keyboard. Here are a few ways you can join in on the fun:

• Embrace the uppercase: Send a playful message to a friend or post on your social media using ONLY CAPITAL LETTERS to see who catches the joke.

• Review your email etiquette: Take a moment to evaluate your professional and personal writing styles to ensure your tone doesn't unintentionally come across as aggressive.

• Spread awareness: Share fun memes or articles about internet culture and keyboard history with your network.

So, go ahead and unleash your inner loudmouth for a day, but remember to turn it back off once the celebration wraps up!
