About World Badminton Day
When is World Badminton Day?
Each year on 5 July, badminton players, fans, and organisations around the globe come together to celebrate World Badminton Day. This is a day dedicated to one of the world’s most accessible, fast-paced, and inclusive sports.
Established by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), the day aims to promote the sport worldwide, encourage participation at all levels, and highlight badminton's positive impact on health, community, and international cooperation.
Why 5 July?
World Badminton Day was launched in 2022 by the BWF to mark the founding of the International Badminton Federation (now BWF) on 5 July 1934. This date now serves as an annual rallying point to celebrate the sport’s history, values, and continued global growth.
A Truly Global Sport
From local parks and school gyms to Olympic stadiums, badminton is played and loved on every continent. It's one of the few sports that combines agility, speed, tactical intelligence, and elegance - all in a court just 13.4 metres long. With over 200 member associations under the BWF umbrella, badminton is now more global than ever.
World Badminton Day is a celebration of this reach. It recognises not just the elite athletes who inspire millions, but also the grassroots players, coaches, volunteers, and enthusiasts who keep the sport alive in local communities.
How is World Badmington Day Celebrated?
World Badminton Day is marked by a wide range of activities around the world:
Community Events: Free "come-and-try" sessions, school visits, and public tournaments help introduce new players to the game.
Social Media Campaigns: The #WorldBadmintonDay hashtag encourages players of all levels to share their stories, photos, and videos.
Exhibition Matches: Some federations host exhibition games featuring local legends or national athletes.
Inclusive Play: The BWF promotes events that bring people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds onto the court, supporting badminton’s ethos of accessibility.
In recent years, countries from India to Indonesia, Canada to Kenya, and Denmark to the Dominican Republic have hosted special events to mark the day.
More Than Just a Game
Badminton is more than a sport; it’s a vehicle for social development, gender equality, and healthy living. Through initiatives like the Shuttle Time programme, BWF is helping bring physical education to children in schools around the world, especially in underserved regions.
On World Badminton Day, these values are front and centre. The event reinforces badminton’s role in uniting people, improving lives, and building healthier societies.
