About National Herbs and Spices Day
A day to celebrate those plants who bring taste and flavor to our dishes.
Both herbs and spices come from plants but herbs are the fresh part of the plant while spice is the dried root, dried stalk, seed or dried fruit of the plant and is almost always dried not fresh.
A herb is any plant with leaves, seeds, or flowers used for flavoring, food, medicine, or perfume. Popular herbs include sage, lavender, basil, and rosemary.
A spice is an aromatic or pungent seed, fruit, root, bark, or other plant used for flavoring, coloring, or preserving food. They include cinnamon, anise, nutmeg, and cloves.
Sometimes a plant can be both a herb and a spice, such as cilantro/coriander.
