About National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk
In September 2025, both chambers of Congress approved resolutions to honor conservative influencer Charlie Kirk.
In the Senate, the resolution designates October 14, Kirk’s birthday, as the “National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk” and calls for Americans to remember his legacy. It was introduced by Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) and co-sponsored by nearly two dozen other Republicans, passing by unanimous consent and a voice vote.
The move was largely ceremonial and doesn’t have the same impact as a law.
A similar House resolution to honor Kirk caused division among Democrats. After a meeting on Thursday, Democratic House leadership agreed to vote in favor of a resolution from House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) that recognizes Kirk and condemns all political violence.
Johnson’s resolution calls “upon all Americans — regardless of race, party affiliation, or creed — to reject political violence, recommit to respectful debate, uphold American values, and respect one another as fellow Americans.”
Kirk, 31, was fatally shot while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, on Sept. 10. A 22-year-old Utah resident is now facing charges in his death.
