About Lumberjack Day
What is Lumberjack Day?
Celebrated every year on September 26th, Lumberjack Day is all about honoring the rugged outdoorsmen and women of timber lore, embracing cozy flannel style, and enjoying hearty comfort food.
Originally created in 2005 by friends Chad Johnson and Marianne Ways as a fun excuse to eat pancakes while talking like a lumberjack, the day has quickly grown into a favorite quirky holiday across North America.
Whether you have actual wood-chopping experience or your connection to lumberjacking is simply owning a comfortable plaid shirt, Lumberjack Day gives everyone a chance to unleash their inner outdoor enthusiast for twenty-four hours.
Did you know? The iconic red-and-black checkered plaid shirt became associated with lumberjacks in the 1850s when Woolrich Woolen Mills introduced the Buffalo Check shirt, which quickly became essential gear for forestry workers.
The History of Lumberjack Day
Lumberjack Day actually started as a cozy alternative to Talk Like a Pirate Day. Creators Chad Johnson and Marianne Ways wanted a holiday that allowed people to embrace fun, exaggerated personas, but with a warm stack of pancakes and syrup involved.
Over time, the celebration shifted from casual humor to a broader appreciation for forestry heritage, folklore icons like Paul Bunyan, and lumberjack sports competitions like log rolling and axe throwing.
Did you know? Traditional lumberjacks consumed up to 7,000 to 9,000 calories a day to sustain their heavy physical labor during harsh winters in logging camps!
How to Celebrate Lumberjack Day
Getting involved in Lumberjack Day doesn't require a forest or a crosscut saw—just a spirit of fun and maybe a big appetite. Here are a few popular ways to join in on the celebration:
Dress the Part: Throw on your favorite red-and-black plaid flannel, suspend your jeans, and rock a cozy beanie or boots.
Fuel Up on Pancakes: Cook a massive stack of flapjacks topped with butter and real maple syrup, just like a classic logging camp breakfast.
Try Axe Throwing: Gather a few friends and head to a local indoor axe-throwing venue to test your target skills safely.
Explore Folklore Stories: Read up on legendary figures like Paul Bunyan and his giant blue ox, Babe, or watch a documentary on historic forestry.
Spend Time Outdoors: Go for a hike in the woods, gather around an evening bonfire, or admire the trees in your nearest state park.
Hosting a Lumberjack Day Breakfast
If you want to bring friends together for a lumberjack-themed morning gathering, follow these simple steps:
Plan a hearty menu focused on pancakes, bacon, sausages, hash browns, and strong black coffee.
Encourage all your guests to arrive dressed in their best flannel shirts and boots.
Set the mood with folk acoustic music or bluegrass tracks in the background.
Serve breakfast family-style with plenty of maple syrup and warm butter at the center of the table.
Host a lighthearted competition, such as a pancake-eating challenge or a best-beard contest.
