About Beer Can Appreciation Day
Canned beer went on sale for the first time at Richmond, VA on this day in 1935. The American Can Company and the Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company collaborated to package 2,000 cans of Krueger's Finest Beer and Krueger's Cream Ale.
It was an immediate success, and by the end of 1935, most major breweries had begun using cans. More than 200 million cans sold that first year.
All metal beer cans are recyclable, so it’s important not to throw them in the bin.
According to Recycle More, if all the aluminium cans sold were recycled there would be around 14 million fewer dustbins emptied into landfill sites every year. Simply rinse out your cans and put them in your recycling bin or take them to a recycling centre.
If you buy a multipack with plastic rings, cut these up and they can be recycled at your local supermarket along with plastic bags.
