This day is observed twice a year, on the Summer Solstice and the Winter Solstice.

It honors Anne Frank and Samantha Smith, two young women whose words have inspired millions.

Anne Frank

Anne Frank is one of the most discussed Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Anne gained fame posthumously with the publication of The Diary of a Young Girl, in which she documents her life in hiding from 1942 to 1944, during the German occupation of the Netherlands in the second world war.

Samatha Smith

In November of 1982 Samantha Smith, a 10-year-old girl from Manchester, Me., wrote to Soviet leader Yuri Andropov to ask if he was going to wage a nuclear war against the U.S. The following July she toured the USSR at his invitation and as a result, became known as America's youngest goodwill ambassador. In 1985 she was cast in TV series, Lime Street, with actor Robert Wagner. Sadly, Samantha died on a rainy August night in 1985 while returning from London when the commercial plane she was in crashed killing all aboard.
