About Cupcake Day
A Little Bit of History
While the origins of this specific day are not well-documented, the history of the cupcake itself dates back to the late 18th century.
The earliest known recipe for a cake baked in small cups was found in Amelia Simmons' 1796 cookbook, American Cookery. The term "cupcake" later appeared in Eliza Leslie’s cookbook in 1828.
Before modern muffin tins became commonplace, these small cakes were often baked in individual pottery cups, which is where they get their charming name.
In the UK, a similar small cake is often called a "fairy cake," and while they can be a bit smaller and typically have less elaborate frosting, they share the same delightful spirit.
Ways to Celebrate Cupcake Day
Celebrating Cupcake Day is easy and, most importantly, delicious! Here are a few ways you can join in the festivities:
Bake a Batch: Get in the kitchen and try out a new cupcake recipe. Experiment with different cake bases, from a rich red velvet to a zesty lemon, and top them with your favourite buttercream or cream cheese frosting.
Decorate with Fun: The best part about cupcakes is the endless decorating possibilities. Use colourful sprinkles, edible glitter, fresh fruit, or even tiny candies to create a masterpiece.
Share the Sweets: Cupcakes are meant to be shared! Bring a batch to work, give them to your friends and family, or host a small gathering to enjoy them together.
Support a Local Bakery: If baking isn't your thing, that's okay! Many local bakeries and cafes will have a special selection of cupcakes for the day. Treat yourself and support a small business at the same time.
Did you know? The other kind of "cup cake" from the 19th century referred to a cake whose ingredients were measured by volume using a cup, rather than being weighed. This led to recipes being called "1234 cakes" because they often used one cup of butter, two cups of sugar, three cups of flour, and four eggs.
