In 1818, he established the Saint Sava Academy in Bucharest, which became the very first high school to teach academic subjects in the Romanian language rather than Greek, which was the norm for the elite at the time.
Lazăr's revolutionary idea that everyone should have access to education in their native tongue laid the groundwork for the modern school system. To cement his legacy, the Romanian Parliament officially passed a law in 2007 establishing his birthday as a national day to celebrate all educators.
