About National Watermelon Day
August 3rd is the day set aside to enjoy the popular and juicy fruit that is 92 percent water. Because it is composed of more than 90 percent water, its consumption is beneficial to our health. It is commonly used in the preparation of salads, and watermelon juice and ice cream are also highly popular.
Watermelon is a gourd that belongs to the cucurbitaceae plant family of gourds (designated as Citrullus lantus). It is related to cucumber, squash, and pumpkin, among other things. It is grown from seeds or seedlings, harvested, and then removed from the field in the same way that other vegetables are grown.
Most scientists believe the watermelon’s progenitor, or ″ur-watermelon,″ originated in Africa and then moved north into Mediterranean nations and then to other areas of Europe.
The roots of watermelon growing can be traced back to ancient Egypt. It is believed that the cultivation of the Watermelon began as early as the second millennium B.C. in the Nile Valley.
- Did you know? Ancient Egyptian watermelons looked the same as they do now but they tasted like cucumbers.
Some of the celebrations for National Watermelon Day include creating watermelon sculptures and playing the Japanese game of Suikawari or Watermelon Splitting.
