About National Police Memorial Day
The National Police Memorial Day (NPMD) was founded by Joe Holness, following the brutal killing of fellow Kent Police officer Jon Odell, at Margate, in December 2000.
It is an official national day and is celebrated throughout the 4 constituent countries. The NPMD is sponsored by the British Government and the Royal Family of the United Kingdom, with Charles, Prince of Wales even becoming patron in 2006.
This official annual national day rotates around each of the four countries, is held on the nearest Sunday to 29th September. This coincides with Saint Michael's Day - The patron Saint of Police officers.
The National Police Memorial Day aims to:
- Remember police officers who have been killed or died on duty
- Demonstrate to relatives, friends and colleagues of fallen officers that their sacrifice is not forgotten
- Recognise annually the dedication to duty and courage displayed by police officers
