About World Guitar Day
A worldwide artistic celebration established in 2021 at the initiative of prominent Greek guitarist and composer Ioannis Andreanopoulos and supported by cultural institutions around the world.
What is Guitar Day?
Whether you are a seasoned professional shredding on stage, a casual bedroom picker, or someone who simply cannot imagine your favorite songs without a killer riff, World Guitar Day is the ultimate excuse to turn up the volume.
Across the globe, music lovers unite to celebrate the incredible cultural footprint of the guitar—an instrument that has anchored everything from soulful blues and classical arrangements to thumping rock anthems and modern pop. It is time to dust off your case, tune up your strings, and pay homage to the wooden or electric marvels that shape our soundtracks every single day.
Did you know? The oldest known preserved guitar dates back to around 1581 and was built in Portugal by master craftsman Belchior Dias!
The Rich History of the Guitar
While modern variations like the electric and acoustic guitar feel thoroughly contemporary, the instrument’s lineage spans back over 4,000 years.
Early ancestors of stringed instruments appeared in ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia and Egypt. However, it was during the 16th century in Spain that the modern guitar truly began to take shape, eventually evolving into the diverse family of instruments we recognize today.
From nylon-stringed classical masterpieces to heavy steel-stringed acoustic and high-powered electric bodies, the guitar has continuously reinvented itself alongside technological and musical shifts.
How to Get Involved
You don't need to be a guitar virtuoso to join in on the fun. There are plenty of ways to celebrate the day, whether you want to make some noise yourself or simply appreciate the artists who do:
Play a tune: Pull your guitar out of the closet, practice those chord progressions you've been meaning to learn, or write a brand-new riff.
Support local live music: Check out a local venue, pub, or open mic night to support independent guitarists and bands playing in your community.
Deepen your playlist: Spend the day exploring legendary guitarists—from blues pioneers like B.B. King to rock icons like Jimi Hendrix and classical masters like Andrés Segovia.
Learn something new: If you've always wanted to play, use today as the push to sign up for your very first lesson or watch an online tutorial.
So, plug in, unplug, or simply sit back and let the music play. How will you be celebrating World Guitar Day this year?
