Who doesn't love a good teddy bear? These cuddly companions hold a truly special spot in our hearts, bringing us comfort, love, and a wonderful wave of nostalgia.
International Teddy Bear Day is one of those unofficial, warm, and utterly kind holidays that gives us all an excuse to celebrate the plush symbol of childhood that has brought joy to countless generations.
About International Teddy Bear Day
You might be wondering why October 27th was chosen for this delightful observance. Well, it's actually the birthday of Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States.
This date isn't just a random pick; it's a symbolic choice because Roosevelt himself became an integral part of the fascinating history behind the creation of the teddy bear!
The Origin Story
The story goes that in November 1902, President Roosevelt was on a hunting trip in Mississippi. During the trip, his hosts cornered and tied a bear to a tree, inviting Roosevelt to shoot it.
However, Roosevelt, being the sportsman he was, refused to shoot the helpless animal, deeming it unsportsmanlike. This act of compassion made headlines, and a political cartoonist named Clifford Berryman drew a cartoon depicting the event.
The cartoon, titled "Drawing the Line in Mississippi," showed Roosevelt refusing to shoot the bear cub.
Inspired by this cartoon, a candy store owner in Brooklyn, New York, named Morris Michtom and his wife, Rose, created a stuffed fabric bear and placed it in their shop window with a sign that read "Teddy's Bear." They even sent one to President Roosevelt, asking for permission to use his name, which he graciously granted. And just like that, the teddy bear was born!
- Did you know? The first teddy bears were often made with mohair fur, shoebutton eyes, and stuffed with wood wool or kapok.
- Did you know? In Germany, a toy company named Steiff also began producing plush bears around the same time, unaware of the American "Teddy's Bear." Richard Steiff's design debuted at the Leipzig Toy Fair in 1903.
- Did you know? The world's most expensive teddy bear, a Steiff "Louis Vuitton" bear, sold for $2.1 million at auction in 2000!
