About Chef Appreciation Week
Behind every memorable meal, bustling restaurant, and comforting dish is a dedicated team of culinary talent working tireless hours behind the scenes.
Chef Appreciation Week is an annual, industry-wide celebration created to honor the incredible skill, passion, and creativity that chefs and culinary professionals bring to our tables every day. Whether they are crafting fine dining masterpieces, cooking in local school cafeterias, or serving up comfort food at the neighborhood diner, this week is all about saying a much-deserved thank you to the heroes of the kitchen.
Did you know? Chef Appreciation Week was originally founded in 2013 by Donald and Lisa Crutch through their non-profit organization, Chefs Against Cancer, as a way to unite the industry and give back to hardworking food professionals.
The History of Chef Appreciation Week
What started as a heartfelt grassroots movement quickly grew into a global phenomenon. In 2018, Compass Group, the world's largest food services company, partnered with Donald and Lisa Crutch to help expand the initiative across its extensive network of cafés and dining venues.
Following the sad passing of Donald Crutch in 2019, Compass committed to honoring his legacy by ensuring his vision lived on. Today, the initiative remains an open, industry-wide event celebrated by hospitality businesses, restaurants, and food lovers worldwide.
Did you know? The traditional white chef's hat, known as a toque blanche, historically featured 100 folds, which were said to symbolize the 100 different ways a master chef could prepare an egg!
How to Get Involved and Celebrate
Showing your appreciation for your favorite chefs and kitchen crews is easy, and even the smallest gesture can make a big difference in a demanding industry. Here are a few great ways you can get involved during Chef Appreciation Week:
Send compliments to the kitchen: The next time you enjoy a great meal out, ask your server to pass along your thanks directly to the chef and kitchen crew.
Shout them out on social media: Take a photo of your favorite dish, tag the restaurant, and post a message of gratitude using official hashtags like #ChefAppreciationWeek.
Treat your team: If you run a business or work in management, organize a special catering treat, staff lunch, or award recognition for your back-of-house staff.
Leave a glowing review: Mention the fantastic culinary team by name or dish in an online review to help support their hard work and boost their business.
Chef Appreciation Week reminds us that food is so much more than sustenance—it's a universal language that brings people together and builds community. Take a moment this week to toast the amazing culinary talent making it all possible!
