About Linnaeus Day
May 23rd is the birthday of Carl Linnaeus (1707 - 1778), Sweden’s beloved botanist who gave an order to the plant and animal kingdoms.
Linnaeus’ way of classifying Nature was so good that this system, called Systema naturae, came to be used all over the world.
Linnaeus is the reason we refer to all species with two names: Humans are Homo sapiens, all pet dogs are Canis lupus, cats are Felis catus, and the Indian rhino is Rhinoceros unicornis.
